Fear and Worry

I am currently reading through a book called Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges (I would recommend anything he has written!). The basic premise of the book is that we tend to classify sins into categories where some are more serious than others. Those that are more common and that don’t seem to lead to big, public, life-changing consequences tend to not be taken as seriously as we pursue holiness and Christ-likeness. This book is a challenge that this mentality is flawed and unbiblical and that we should have no category for “respectable sins” because all sin is an offense against our holy God and the cause of our needed redemption through the cross of Christ.

What are some of the respectable sins we see in our lives? There are tons! One that is very common is worry or anxiety. Many people will say that is just part of who they are and see no need to do any soul searching or sin killing in this area. But what is anxiety? It is a lack of trust in God’s plans and God’s promises. I found this article helpful in thinking through this issue of fear and worry that so often consumes our lives and how we ought to think biblically about it.
